Here is what I am expecting for the final 8-page paper.

The paper needs to be a self-conscious blend of theory and "practice." The theory can be one of the broad ones described in Dye, or it can be an aspect of the theories as discussed in any of the reserve readings. The "practice" may be any aspect of the prohibition case. For example, you may discuss the role of churches, the way that the issue was framed as "anti-saloon," the differences between the circumstances surrounding early defeats and later successes, and so on. To the extent possible, contrast at least two theories – as if they are being evaluated by the "data." It is acceptable, however, simply to "test" one theory. You need not relate the prohibition case to today, but you should highlight a few generalizable lessons hinted at by the theory and evidence.

In organizing the paper, do one of two things.

  1. Blend theory and practice on page one, followed by three pages of theory, three of practice, and one "conclusion" page blending the two again.
  2. Blend theory and practice on every page, devoting at least 30 percent of the paper to specific references and insights from theory.
